The latest Brian Singer film, Bohemian Rhapsody, has clearly raised interest in musical cinema and biopics. All the people who filled out the cinemas will be asking: “Is this the start of a trend of films about bands and musicians?”

What is certain is that the story of Freddie Mercury and his breathtaking career will not be the only musical film we’ll see in cinemas this year. The most recent film to hit cinemas is Rocketman, an interesting film that covers the life and work of Elton John, played by the young British actor Taron Egerton.

A Star is Born

We start the list with one of last year favourites. The love story portrayed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper is an outstanding film topped off with a high-quality soundtrack. This much is clear as the song “Shallow” won Best Original Song at the Oscars.

Whiplash

This dramatic film will fill you with tension thanks to the performance of J.K. Simmons as a professor at the east coast conservatory. It is a constant battle of the percussion titans as the main character, played by Miles Teller, tries to overcome him. It’s one of those films that makes you plunge into jazz music.

La La Land

The director Damien Chazell, also the writer of Whiplash, has a unique take on jazz. He fills this musical film with love, style and taste in the world surrounding the glamour of Hollywood.

Straight Outta Compton

The story of how two veteran rappers, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, joined forces with their group of friends to create the rap group N.W.A.: from the neighbourhood of Compton, one of the most dangerous in Los Angeles, to revolutionising American society in the 1980s.

Sing Street

This fun film will take you back to the rock music people listened to in 1980s Dublin. Directed by John Carney, author of Begin Again and Once.

Walk the line

A masterful performance from Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash on his way to global stardom.

Amadeus

A masterful performance from Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash on his way to global stardom.

The Runaways

A frenetic adventure through the experiences of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie as they formed the legendary band The Runaways. A perfect way to portray two of the most provocative personalities in the female music scene.

8 Mile

Eminem’s biography, which tells of his most difficult experiences as a teenager in a Detroit neighbourhood.

Control

The story of Ian Curtis would shape the British music scene in the 1970s. The lead singer of Joy Division was driven by expressing himself through music, and this film shows how it affected his personal life.
