In English, AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes.
As you will probably know, LCD screens need backlighting to display both standard and black colours. Black pixels on this type of screen turn opaque, that is, they don't let the light pass through. Quite the opposite is true for AMOLED screens, which do not require backlighting.
Each pixel is a little blue, green or red light and it is not necessary to block the incoming light to display black colour. What happens is that colour pixels do not light up.
Since AMOLED screens don't work with backlighting, we can spare a layer (thus we can get even a thinner screen). They are also more efficient screens and they use less battery, especially with black wallpapers since pixels are turned off.
But that's not all! Besides being 20% more efficient, AMOLED screens have more realistic colours because they achieve 100% of the NTSC standard providing, this way, more contrast and definition.
As you can see, this type of technology has many advantages: more vivid and realistic colours, better contrast, optimized battery consumption and the possibility of having a thinner terminal (since they have a layer less).
