Hearing Health: How to Measure Sound Decibels

Salud auditiva. Cómo medir los decibelios de sonido
We live surrounded by sounds. That's why you should keep in mind the importance of sound decibels, as well as the importance of loud music when listening to music. It's very likely that most of us aren't really aware of the annoying sounds we're exposed to every day, and, in fact, we've assimilated them into our routines. Whether at home, while working, or on the way to the office, you should keep in mind a series of guidelines regarding decibel levels to prevent them from becoming harmful to your health.

What are decibels of sound?

This is the unit of measurement used to measure sound pressure or sound level (expressed in dB). Thus, depending on the sound pressure exerted by the emitter of the sound wave, a range of auditory perception is established at the hearing threshold:

  • The softest sound some humans can hear is 20dB or less.

  • A normal conversation ranges between 40 and 60 dB.

  • A rock concert is between 110dB and 120dB and can be as loud as 140dB if you are positioned directly in front of the speakers.

And is listening to music with headphones harmful?

Using headphones isn't inherently harmful to your health. Uncontrolled use can have negative effects on your hearing. As we mentioned, it's also important to know the power of your sound equipment to make the most of it. Therefore, we offer these recommendations to avoid negative consequences when interpreting sound decibels:

  • Take five-minute breaks after listening to music for an hour straight.

  • Keep the volume below 70% as a general rule. This is very important, as experiencing very high volume levels at such a short distance from the ear can be harmful.

  • Avoid sharing earbuds without first taking hygienic measures. One of the least-known aspects is the risk involved in one of the most common habits: sharing earbuds. Compared to sharing your toothbrush, bacteria is also transmitted and can lead to ear infections.

To avoid this, we recommend that you first disinfect the headphones with a little alcohol or by replacing the ear cushions with replacement ones.
