Tell me what you listen to, and I'll tell you who you are. This seems to be the conclusion psychologists Rentfrow and Gosling reached after conducting a study published in the journal Psychological Science on the effects music has on people's behavior and character.
It's nothing new that a person's tastes can be an indicator of their personality, but musical tastes in particular can reveal a lot in this regard.
The study was conducted on a representative sample of the population, paired up to observe their interaction. Although the conversations cover a wide variety of topics, 58% of the time is devoted to music and everything related to it.
At first glance, it's easiest to think that this predilection for music is due to the fact that musical tastes, in some way, provide us with a lot of information about the person we're getting to know. This shows that musical tastes are a more than valid predictor of each person's personality. For example, sung songs speak of an extroverted personality, country music is a sign of emotional stability, while jazz is associated with an intellectual personality.
