Broadly speaking, you should know that all power is expressed in watts (W) and indicates, to a certain extent, the "strength" of a speaker's construction. There are different ways of expressing power depending on the manufacturer: effective or nominal (RMS) power, musical power, or peak power.

NOMINAL OR EFFECTIVE POWER (RMS)

RMS stands for "Root Mean Square" and indicates the average power level. This is the admissible power the speaker can handle before excessive sound distortion or deterioration begins. This is the first important power rating if you want to know how to interpret speaker power.

If the speaker is operated above this nominal power, it could be irreparably damaged, as it would not be able to dissipate the heat produced by the electric current flowing through the coil, and this could melt the insulation covering the copper wire that forms it.

This power measurement is the one that provides the most useful information when evaluating a sound system and can serve as a comparison between different models. Ultimately, it is the power that should serve as a guide when deciding on a purchase because it is the most accurate and offers the most value.



MUSICAL POWER

It is the amount of electrical power that a speaker is able to withstand with an input signal of pink noise (sound that simulates a musical theme) without suffering permanent damage.

The test normally lasts one second and is repeated 60 times at one-minute intervals.

The value obtained is calculated based on the nominal impedance value. For this reason, and using pink noise "to taste" (under ideal conditions), the results are entirely subjective and offer unreliable information.

PEAK POWER (PMPO)

Peak Music Power Output (PMPO) is the maximum musical output power. This term refers to the maximum power successfully delivered and dissipated to speakers under perfect conditions. It is measured in extremely short time intervals (10 ms) and until the speaker breaks.

It's important to clarify that PMPO power is not a "real" value at all. Rather, it's a completely useless marketing statistic used by many manufacturers to provide a stronger selling point. Therefore, for greater reliability, it's recommended to use the nominal power, which represents the actual power the speaker can handle.
